The Fabrication Shop Coordinator is primarily responsible for planning and coordinating multiple fabrication assignments concurrently in accordance with specifications and customer requirements. To achieve these goals, the Fabrication Shop Coordinator will assess the customer scopes of work, define job execution requirements in dialog with team supervisors, co-ordinate engineering and quality requirements, and order all required materials and hardware for the assignments. This position is responsible for creating job execution packages for the manufacturing team, which include clear instructions, shop drawings, sequence descriptions, bill of materials, tools, quality requirements and hold points, third-party contractor requirements including NDT and painting. The Fabrication Shop clients are both internal and external to the company.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Clearly identify the overall manufacturing and quality requirements from the scope of work
  • Plan the manufacturing lifecycles of the fabrication shop jobs, with input from the manufacturing team and SMEs
  • Conduct cost analyses of the planned jobs
  • Conduct risk assessments on the execution of the work with shop team members; include risk mitigating steps into manufacturing plans
  • Evaluate job activities throughout lifecycle, including the allocation of adequate resources, scheduling, documentation, budget, and other factors necessary for success
  • Plan shop work execution timelines, milestones, deliverables, and micro-deliverables using the appropriate software tools and/or methods
  • Communicate with internal and external customers, vendors, service providers to ensure all job requirements are being met
  • Keep both internal and external customers informed of job status
  • Produce regular reports (e.g., schedule compliance, planning progress, workbook status, cost performance on planned vs actual) on the progress and quality of jobs
  • Track job costs and compare to initial estimates
  • Lead manufacturing job post-mortems to identify areas for improvement; make recommendations and incorporate actions into future packages
  • Coordination of third-party contractors required (e.g., third-party NDT, manufactured parts, coatings, or specialty processes)
  • Purchase items, materials, and hardware required to complete jobs in a timely fashion
    • Source out comparable components in the event of supply issues
  • Develop Inspection Test Plan (ITPs) from the information given in the scope of work, on drawings, or client correspondence
    • ITPs are sent to the QAQC department for review and approval
  • Schedule or coordinate fabrication equipment repairs/maintenance and calibration as required 
  • Monitor and oversee the purchasing of materials and develop min/max quantities for stock of shop consumables
  • Review shop drawings and collaborate with the Engineering Department to identify potential problems and issue change orders
  • Support estimator using historical data and experience

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent
  • 3 to 5 years of direct work experience in a manufacturing co-ordination role, preferably in a steel fabrication shop
  • Ability to create planning packages, inspection and test plans, material requisitions, production schedules, presentations, and turnover documentation
  • Drawing and blueprint interpretation skills required
  • Working knowledge of Global Shop or other manufacturing ERP software
  • Possesses and applies solid understanding of manufacturing best practices
  • Internal and external customer focus; co-ordination with the Group of Companies shops and service providers
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Strong problem identification and resolution skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet critical deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Team player and able to work in an integrated manufacturing environment
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple responsibilities; flexible and adaptable to changing demands
  • Must demonstrate sound decision-making and judgement skills
